“It’s not what happens to you, but what you DO with what happens to you.”
Pamela Winderweedle Hillman is founder and president of LifeChangers Legacy, Chebar Ministries. Our organization is designed to empower women and men returning home from incarceration and their families. We provide them with the tools necessary to equip and achieve financial independence, personal growth, family restoration, leadership, and a spiritual foundation. All through a Holy Spirit inspired curriculum of continuous education. The goal is to help the whole person live a Christ-centered life that builds confidence and dependence in God.
Our four phase program was designed by Pamela Hillman who was sentenced to prison, has beat the odds and succeed in recovery & became an outstanding member of society. 63% of citizens return to prison within 3 years. They have difficulty finding jobs, places to live, and most are still suffering with traumas causing a cycle of pain and suffering not only to the offenders but to their families as well. For instance if a child has had a parent incarcerated the child is 33% more likely to commit a crime. As the result of her past and knowing the facts she has made it her life mission to use her experiences to tackle each know factor of recidivism.
I was sexually abused from age 5 by three different men, causing unbearable pain. I learned that drugs could numb that pain and became addicted for 35 years. Because of my dependence on drugs, I progressed into deeper dis-functional behaviors, which ultimately led me to prison for 18 months. That’s when I discovered I could relate to some of the same horrific experiences that many women in prison and outside have suffered. For instance 1 in 3 have been sexually assaulted. I realized my “Josephine” calling while there.
At age 26 I recommitted my life to Jesus after trying to commit suicide. Throughout my life I still could not shake the drug dependency, even though I had such a relentless desire to change and knew Jesus. I realized I had to find out what was causing me to go back to this insidious addiction even though I had such a desire to stay clean.
After deep reflection I discovered I had to change my old mind-set and face some core issues and traumas that had engraved my behavior, in order to bring about lasting change. I studied psychology, self-help and recovery books. They did not provide me with the complete answer. Then I discovered that only through memorizing the Word of God, and being led by the Holy Spirit, could the healing process begin.
I started Daughters of Zion, Using Your Time Wisely while still incarcerated. I began facilitating groups and seen that the process I was using was helping others. I have made a four phase workbook to be able to reach back into the prison and help bring forth successful members of our community.
